Where an existing shower already contains installed screens, tapware and fixed fittings, direct installation is rarely the most appropriate construction method.

Removing existing fixtures allows the wall system to be installed with correct junctions, finished dimensions and long-term serviceability while preserving construction that remains suitable for continued use.

Although engineered wall panels can often be installed directly onto existing surfaces, existing shower enclosures introduce practical construction considerations that extend beyond simply bonding a new finish to the wall.

 

This installation approach introduces only the construction necessary to remove existing fixtures, prepare the installation area and reinstate the completed shower without assuming underlying deterioration exists.

The qualification criteria below explain where localised deterioration becomes appropriate, the construction it introduces, and the point at which underlying deterioration requires broader remedial work.

Determining Suitability.

Purpose

Where an existing shower is being renewed, removal of the existing screen, tapware and associated wall finishes often provides the most practical method of achieving a clean, integrated installation while preserving suitable underlying construction.

New wall panels align neatly with existing tile surface levels outside the shower zone or in-line with shower screen panels.

Requirements

Appropriate application generally assumes:

• Existing shower screen removal.

• Existing tapware removal.

• Localised tile removal where required.

• Localised wall lining removal where necessary to facilitate installation.

• Waterproof reinstatement where construction has been disturbed.

• Existing shower base remains suitable.

• Structural framing remains suitable.

Where assessment identifies water-damaged wall linings or broader construction deterioration, further reconstruction becomes necessary.

Limitations

This installation method assumes the underlying construction remains suitable once existing fixtures have been removed.

Where demolition exposes deteriorated wall linings, moisture damage or construction requiring broader replacement, simply completing the planned installation no longer provides the most appropriate long-term outcome.

Applications

This installation method is commonly encountered where:

• Existing shower screens require replacement.

• Existing tapware requires removal and reinstatement.

• Existing shower walls are being renewed.

• The underlying wall construction remains suitable for continued service.

• The objective is to modernise an existing shower without broader reconstruction.

• Water-damaged wall linings.

• Widespread moisture penetration.

• Wall lining replacement beyond localised areas.

• Broader waterproof reconstruction.

• Structural timber deterioration.

These conditions indicate that renewal of the existing shower alone is no longer sufficient and broader reconstruction of Water Damaged Linings becomes appropriate before the new engineered wall system is installed.
