A Surface Repair Was Never Going to Fix This Shower

The peeling finish was obvious. The missing waterproofing, trapped moisture, mould and deteriorating timber were not.


At first glance, this shower appeared tired but serviceable. Its white surface coating was peeling away, the joints were deteriorating and the perimeter seals had begun to fail.

These visible defects could easily lead to another surface-level recommendation: strip and respray the tiles, replace the silicone or regrout the shower.

That may improve the appearance. It does not necessarily address what is happening behind it.



The shower presented with extensive peeling, deteriorated joints and visible failure around the wet zone.



The surface was already telling the story


The coating had separated from numerous tiles, particularly across the lower walls where exposure to water was greatest. Open joints and deterioration were also visible through the corners and around the shower base.

These were not isolated cosmetic defects. Together, they indicated that water was no longer being reliably contained within the shower.




The coating had failed across multiple tiles, while open and deteriorated joints provided further pathways for moisture.


A sprayed coating can change the appearance of an old shower, but it cannot replace the waterproofing system behind the wall finish.

Likewise, new grout and silicone can renew accessible joints, but they cannot repair concealed deterioration or create waterproofing where none exists.



The base junction had also broken down


One of the most important areas in any shower is the junction between the wall and the shower base.

Here, the perimeter seal had separated and deteriorated. Once that junction was compromised, water could move beyond the visible finish and into the surrounding construction.




Separation around the shower base allowed moisture to move beyond the visible surface.


Applying another bead of silicone may have temporarily concealed the opening. It would not have removed the water already held behind the walls or corrected the absence of an effective waterproofing system.



What appeared after the tiles were removed


Once the surface was opened, the extent of the problem became clear.

There was no effective waterproofing membrane protecting the shower walls. Moisture had been passing through the failed surface and remaining trapped behind the tiles and wall lining.

Dark staining and mould were visible across the substrate. This was not surface mould caused by ordinary bathroom condensation—it had developed within the wall assembly, out of sight.

Because the area remained enclosed, it had very little opportunity to dry. Continued shower use repeatedly introduced more water into the same concealed space.

The problem had progressed well beyond the point where spraying, sealing or regrouting could provide a responsible repair.



The concealed damage extended into the frame


Further demolition revealed moisture within the wall cavity and deterioration to the timber framing.

Sections of the lower frame had remained wet long enough for rot to develop. Mould growth and excessive moisture were also present around the wall lining, bottom plate and adjoining structural members.



Behind the wall finish, prolonged moisture exposure had affected the lining, cavity and timber frame.


This is the risk with treating every ageing shower as a surface problem.

The visible finish may be the first component to fail, but it is not always the source of the failure. Covering it again can leave the actual moisture pathway—and the materials already affected by it—sealed behind another new surface.

The shower may look renewed while its underlying condition continues to deteriorate.



The repair had to begin behind the finish


The failed materials were removed so the affected area could be properly assessed. Deteriorated components were addressed and the shower was rebuilt from a sound substrate rather than relying on the existing compromised surface.

A continuous waterproofing system was then applied throughout the wet zone, including the wall junctions, penetrations and connection to the shower base.



The rebuilt wet zone was protected with a continuous waterproofing system before the finished wall panels were installed.


Waterproofing is not the decorative finish. It is the concealed system responsible for managing water when moisture moves beyond that finish.

It must be continuous, properly detailed and installed before the completed shower hides it from view.

Once the underlying issues had been resolved, the shower was completed with large-format wet-wall panels, a new shower enclosure and reinstated chrome fittings.

The panels substantially reduced the number of joints within the shower while providing a clean, contemporary surface.



The completed shower combines a continuous waterproofed substrate with low-joint wet-wall panels and a new enclosure.


The visual improvement is obvious, but it was not the most important part of this project.

The real outcome was the removal of trapped moisture and mould-affected materials, the treatment of concealed deterioration and the reconstruction of the shower around an effective waterproofing system.



Before choosing another surface repair


Peeling coatings, recurring mould, cracked grout, loose tiles and failed perimeter seals should not automatically be treated as isolated cosmetic problems.

Before paying for a respray or regrout, it is worth establishing:

  • Why did the existing surface fail?

  • Is water entering behind the tiles?

  • Is there an effective waterproofing system?

  • Has moisture reached the wall lining or timber frame?

  • Will the proposed repair address the cause—or simply cover the evidence?


Sometimes a surface repair is appropriate. Sometimes the real issue sits behind the aesthetic.

Understanding the difference before work begins can prevent another temporary repair from trapping a much larger problem out of sight.
