Tile Removal & LVT Overlay

Where the existing tiled floor no longer provides a suitable foundation for overlay installation, removal of the existing floor finish allows the bathroom to be reconstructed from the substrate upward before introducing the new engineered floor system.

Rather than building over compromised, unstable or unsuitable floor finishes, existing tiles are removed to expose the underlying floor, allowing preparation works to be completed before the new shower base and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) floor are installed.

Although overlay flooring provides an efficient solution in many bathrooms, not every existing floor is suitable for continued service. Loose tiles, excessive height variation, deteriorated substrates or previous repairs may prevent a direct overlay from achieving the intended long-term result.

This installation approach introduces demolition only where existing floor construction prevents a suitable overlay installation, preserving surrounding construction wherever practical while establishing a stable foundation for the completed bathroom floor.

The qualification criteria below explain where tile removal becomes appropriate, the construction it introduces, and the point at which deterioration extends beyond the finished floor into the supporting floor structure.

Determining Suitability.

Purpose

Where the existing tiled floor can no longer provide a suitable foundation for overlay installation, removing the finished floor often provides the most practical method of restoring a stable substrate before introducing the new engineered floor system.

Requirements

Appropriate application generally assumes:

• Existing floor tile removal.

• Shower base removal.

• Plumbing waste reconnection.

• Floor preparation following demolition.

• Existing structural floor remains suitable.

• Localised substrate repairs where required.

Where demolition identifies deteriorated structural flooring, widespread moisture damage or significant floor movement, broader floor reconstruction becomes necessary.​​

Limitations

This level of construction remains appropriate while the supporting floor structure continues to provide a suitable foundation following tile removal.

Where deterioration extends into the structural floor, supporting framework or wider wet-area construction, preparation alone no longer provides the most appropriate long-term solution.

Applications

This level of construction is commonly encountered where:

• Existing floor tiles are loose or unstable.

• Previous floor repairs have failed.

• Existing floor levels prevent suitable overlay installation.

• The existing tiled floor has reached the end of its service life.

• The supporting floor remains suitable following tile removal.

Following reconstruction, the completed bathroom provides:

Progression generally becomes necessary where inspection identifies:

• Deteriorated structural flooring.

• Significant floor movement.

• Moisture-damaged subfloor construction.

• Cement sheet underlay installed across wider areas.

• Structural floor reconstruction.

• Preparation beyond conventional floor renewal

These conditions indicate that deterioration has progressed beyond the finished floor surface. An  Integrated Shower Platform can be incorporated into supporting floor structure before installation of the new engineered floor system.
